Mirena® IUD's are plastic devices that fit inside your uterus and provide contraception. They have several advantages. First they are very effective with greater than 99% prevention of pregnancy.  The stem of the Mirena® contains levonorgestrel, a part of many popular birth control pills. Second, once inserted, they are almost maintenance free. Some women will have almost no periods with the Mirena®, especially if inserted while breast feeding. From a health standpoint this is perfectly OK. The problems with any IUD Irregular bleeding- periods can happen at any time Risk of infection- the IUD is a foreign body in your uterus and can increase... Read The Rest
Genetic Testing For Cancer Risk

2022-01-03Updated: 2022-04-28 Mansfield Miracles, Paul Daum, M.D.

Anyone can be at increased risk for cancer based on their family history. This is especially true for certain types of cancers such as: breast, ovary, colon, endometrium (uterine), pancreas, and melanoma. The more unusual the timing of the cancer (early age onset) or prevalence within a family, the higher the risk may be. There are genetic tests available for helping determine your risk.  The best known hereditary cancer screening tests are the BRAC 1 and BRAC 2 tests for breast and ovarian cancers. However, there are also tests for other syndromes dealing with gastrointestonal and other tumors. These related cancers... Read The Rest
A Pap Smear is Recommended For Cervical Cancer Screening

2022-01-03Updated: 2022-04-28 Mansfield Miracles, Paul Daum, M.D.

With the advancement of DNA technology, it has been determined that 99% of cervical cancers are caused by Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). There are many subtypes of HPV, and a small number have been detected in cervical cancers. These subtypes are called  high risk HPV subtypes. The highest risk types are types 16 and 18. The probability that a woman aged 18 to 24 will contract at least one subtype of HPV  is near 75%.  Most of these are low risk subtypes and eventually are cleared by the body's immune function, which will generally clear without treatment.   New Recommendations / Guidelines Regarding Pap... Permanent Birth Control Procedure

2022-01-03Updated: 2022-04-28 Mansfield Miracles, Paul Daum, M.D.

There has been a good bit of advertising recently about the Essure method of tubal sterilization. Essure is not new, and has been on the market for a number of years. The Essure method of sterilization requires placement of a device in each tubal opening, where it opens into the uterus.  An inflammatory response by your body causes the tube to gradually scar shut.  This process takes three to six months, sometimes longer. The Essure devices are placed into the tubal openings through the vagina using a special hysteroscope.  A hysteroscope is a thin fiberoptic scope used to look into the... Read The Rest
Not All Contractions Mean You're In True Labor

2022-01-03Updated: 2022-04-28 Mansfield Miracles, Paul Daum, M.D.

Labor at term is about trying to decide if it is time to go to the hospital for your newborn's arrival. If it is timed properly, it will prevent frustrating visits to the hospital which result in going back home. Many women have described a contraction as "The baby balls up". What is really happening is the uterus contracting down around the baby.   During a contraction you will feel that the entire uterus is hard or tense. You can feel your stomach and notice that the uterus is hard, and as the contraction eases, the uterus becomes soft again. Contractions are... Read The Rest
Foods That Should Be Avoided During Pregnancy

2022-01-03Updated: 2022-04-28 Mansfield Miracles, Paul Daum, M.D.

In general improve your diet. Eat more green leafy vegetables, fruits (limit by calorie intake), and baked or grilled meats.  Drink lots of water, avoid canned drinks and caffeine. Milk is great, but can account for a lot  of calories in your diet. Vitamin D supplementation in pregnancy is especially important for darker skinned women, and up to 1000 mg per day, along with Omega-3 should be important supplements.    Calcium supplements can be very helpful in the second trimester to stop night time leg cramps. Don't take calcium at the same time as your prenatal vitamin, the iron and calcium mixed together will interfere... Read The Rest

Pregnancy after 35 is very common today

2022-01-03Updated: 2022-04-28 Mansfield Miracles, Paul Daum, M.D.

Pregnancy after 35 can pose some special concerns. If your health is good, you should be able to have a successful pregnancy. More common problems that may develop such as diabetes and hypertension can be managed medically. The specific age related issues are related to increased risk of chromosomal birth defects. The risk of trisomies (three chromosomes instead of two) is increased for chromosomes 13,18 and 21. Down syndrome is trisomy of chromosome 21. The increased risk is gradual with increasing age, but becomes progressively greater after age 35.  The approximate risk at age 35 is 1/270, at 40 is 1/100 and... Read The Rest
Screening for High Risk Pregnancy Populations

2022-01-03Updated: 2022-04-28 Mansfield Miracles, Paul Daum, M.D.

NSL stands for Nuchal SonoLucency. This prenatal screening test (also called the nuchal fold scan) uses ultrasound to measure the clear ("translucent") space in the tissue at the back of your developing baby's neck, and is combined with measurement of two hormones in mom's blood. That measurement can help assess your baby's risk for Down syndrome (DS) and other chromosomal abnormalities as well as major congenital heart problems. When combined with the Quad screen at 16 weeks you have the SEQUENTIAL SCREEN, which is the best of the noninvasive screens for down syndrome, trisomy 13, trisomy 18, and spina bifida. Babies with...
