Hereditary Cancer Syndrome Screening Information

Anyone can be at increased risk for cancer based on their family history. This is especially true for certain types of cancers such as: breast, ovary, colon, endometrium (uterine), pancreas, and melanoma. The more unusual the timing of the cancer (early age onset) or prevalence within a family, the higher the risk may be. There are genetic tests available for helping determine your risk.  The best known hereditary cancer screening tests are the BRAC 1 and BRAC 2 tests for breast and ovarian cancers. However, there are also tests for other syndromes dealing with gastrointestonal and other tumors. These related cancers are commonly are called Lynch Syndrome. Colaris is the name of the test for determination of your risk for these cancers.

Dr. Daum's office offers comprehensive hereditary cancer screening, testing, surveillance, and, if needed, referral to specialists for further evaluation.  Please see the link for a quick determination of your risk.

Myriad Hereditary Cancer Quiz

One of the most important things in this process is an accurate knowledge of your family history. Many times the exact cancer that a family member had is distorted through the passage of time or lack of medical knowledge. Please prepare yourself by asking questions of those still alive and gather as much information about which family members had cancer, how old they were when diagnosed, in what organ the "primary"cancer was diagnosed, and what sorts of treatments were needed. (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery) Many times we find that your reported information is not correct when actually checked out with mother, father, grandparents or other relatives. Be a good detective and get as much detailed information as you can before your appointment. It could make the difference between life and death.
